There're mainly four chips on a hard drive's PCB and this article will give you an general idea of where they are and what they do.

The first chip: The heart chip of one PCB
The heart of PCB is the biggest chip in the middle called Micro Controller Unit or MCU. On modern HDDs MCU usually consists of Central Processor Unit or CPU which makes all calculations and Read/Write channel - special unit which converts analog signals from heads into digital information during read process and encodes digital information into analog signals when drive needs to write. MCU also has IO ports to control everything on PCB and transmit data through SATA interface.

Chip 2: The Memory Chip
The Memory chip is DDR SDRAM memory type chip. Size of the memory defines size of the cache of HDD. Usually you find the size of memory in datasheet of the HDD, theoretically it means HDD has that size of cache but it's not quite true. Because memory logically divided on buffer or cache memory and firmware memory. CPU eats some memory to store some firmware modules and as far as we know only Hitachi/IBM drives show real cache size in data sheets for the other drives you can just guess how big is the real cache size.

Chip 3: VCM(Voice Coil Motor controller) controller chip
This chip is the most power consumption chip on PCB. It controls spindle motor rotation and heads movements. The core of VCM controller can stand working temperature of 100C/212F.

Chip 4: Flash ROM Chip
Flash ROM chip stores part of the drive's firmware. When you apply power on a drive, MCU chip reads content of the flash chip into the memory and starts the code. Without such code the drive wouldn't even spin up. Sometimes there is no flash chip on PCB that means content of the flash located inside MCU.

Samsung Head Swap Tips-Donor Search

So when you confirm it is physical head damage which requires you to perform the head swap to extract the lost data, the next step is to find a donor head or donor hard drive. What's a donor hard drive for Samsung head swap?

From the old families before Victor, Puma, Verna & etc. ( Max capacity 120Gb, Max Head number 4 ) donor drive for Heads stack has to be chosen by the 4-th symbol on the side sticker which consist from 5 symbols. There are 3 versions of this sticker: xxxAx, xxxRx, xxxSx. 4-th symbol should match on patient and on donor drive, this symbol is responsible for this drive Heads stack manufacturer.

From the families like Palo, Magma, P80M, Delphi and other ( Max capacity 160Gb, Max Head number 4 ) to Poseidon family ( Max capacity 250Gb, Max Head number 4 ), the donor drive could be recognized by other symbols on the top sticker after P/V. There are 2 versions of such sticker: P\V: xS, P\V: xA. As you see the second symbol should be matched. Nowadays this sticker as P/V: xA does not exists on manufactured drives.

There are no symbols/codes responsible for Heads on the HDD stickers for Trident( T133(S)), T166(S), M60(S), M80(S) ) families . But the hard drive manufacturer started to use only "S ( SAE )" heads. So , for this families, the heads stack donor has to belong same family and its heads map should be the same as on patient.

Samsung Hot Swap Guide

Samsung hot swap is one common and important method to repair samsung damaged hard drives. In order to perform one Samsung head swap, you need to find one donor samsung hard drive with donor PCB. TO be a donor drive, the head map and model number require to be the same.

The following are the reference steps for Samsung hotswap:

Step 1: Power on donor. Run the hdd repair tool which support hotswap. Wait until initialization will complete,then put drive to sleep mode;(You can use pc3000 udma)

Step 2: Unscrew the PCB from donor and install it on patient drive. Screw the screws back. And perform recalibration;

Step 3: Wait until the drive will enter ready state, then read the modules from the drive except some "big capacity" log modules;

Step 4: Power off donor PCB and swap it on donor HDA;

Step 5: Write all necessary modules(Look the list below) from patient to donor drive .Then switch drive's Power off/on;

Step 6: Press Sleep and Swap the PCB from donor drive to patient HDA;

Step 7: Screw all the screws and do the recalibration. The patient drive is "hot-swapped", try to access the data on it.

Hardware SD continua a ser o maior trunfo para meu negócio

Estou tão feliz que eu comprar os reis de dados adicionais. Os quatro reis de dados levou aproximadamente 2,5 horas para imagem 4 1.5 TB unidades de um array raid 5. Uma unidade relatou mais de 60.000 setores defeituosos e outra mais de 24.000 setores defeituosos durante a geração de imagens sobre os DKs. Eu tinha certeza de que com tanto dano em dois discos da matriz, havia uma boa possibilidade da maioria da matriz sendo não recuperável. Tentei as quatro unidades com outro software de imagem. A unidade de 60.000 setor mau falhado completamente e a unidade de 24.000 setor mau relatou mais de 2.000.000 setores defeituosos. As duas unidades boas começaram também relatórios setores defeituosos. As unidades foram apenas 3 meses de idade, então eu suspeito que o lote de unidade era ruim. As imagens originais dos DKs foram montadas e a partição de matriz reconstruída, mas a estrutura de arquivo foi completamente corrompida. A digitalização bruta da matriz foi capaz de recuperar os 580 shows inteiras de dados, 98% dos quais não foi danificado. Se não for para o rápido e preciso imaging de DKs em quatro unidades de falha severamente o resultado para o cliente teria sido devastadora. Devido a outros problemas, esta foi a única cópia dos dados e mais era insubstituível. O cliente é um grande escritório do advogado da cidade da cidade dos Estados Unidos.

Mais uma vez os reis de dados têm fora pré-formada qualquer coisa que eu tenho usado, como faz todo o hardware de recuperação de dados de salvação. Hardware SD continua a ser o maior trunfo para meu negócio.

Consumer smartphones 'can pose' data security risk

The widespread use of consumer smartphones in the workplace can pose a threat to corporate data security, it has been claimed.

A recent study by Juniper Networks found that more workers are using their own mobile devices to access company data, emphasising the need for more stringent and better integrated mobile security.

Heather Mclean, editor at mobile trade magazine Mobile Business, said: "If enough people start buying iPhone's and HTC [High Tech Computer] Android handsets and coming into work with them, then that creates a security issue."

Security vendors are now developing software for "more fashionable" smartphones which is secure enough to use in a business environment, Ms Mclean said.

Earlier this year, international bank Standard Chartered confirmed that it would issue its employees with an iPhone.

"They keep their staff happy, but then they control the security levels on the iPhones," she added.

UK information commissioner rules on Google data-leak prevention

The UK Information Commissioner's Office recently ruled it will audit Google's data-leak prevention practices after it found a "significant breach" of the country's Data Protection Act pertaining to the internet giant's Street View cars.

Google has come under scrutiny across the globe since it was discovered the cars used to collect information for its Street View function collected personal information from unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Google has said it is "profoundly sorry for mistakenly collecting payload data in the UK." The company said code written by one of its engineers was inadvertently added to the Street View software.

"Since we announced our mistake in May we have co-operated closely with the ICO and worked to improve our internal controls," Google said of its data-leak prevention.

The UK ICO originally ruled no data breach had occurred, but re-examined the case after the Canadian data protection agency ruled Google violated regulations. In Germany, the government forced Google to allow citizens to opt out of being included in Street View before the service went live. Italy and the Czech Republic placed similar restrictions on Google.

So, we failed to change the model number from WD2003FYYS-ABC001 to WD2003FYYS-ABC002 with the former version of WD doctor.

After a research on the new hard drive, we found out, the model number has not been stored in the same place as old drives, but in the ROM module D—000D

So we decided to upgrade HD Doctor for WD to version 4.3. Now let’s use HD Doctor for WD Version 4.3 to modify the model number of the new WD hard drive:

Now, we are able to change the model number from WD2003FYYS-ABC001 to WD2003FYYS-ABC000 with the new version of WD doctor 4.3.

1. Flash Data Recovery Tools Flash Doctor Ver.1.40
1. Add the feature to modify page size.

For some FLASH devices, the data recovery tools can not correctly detect the real page size; therefore the data recovery tools provide an option for users to modify page size after analysis. Example, if the data recovery tools detect the page size as 4224, but users find that data is not complete in a page, namely there is not enough bytes to form a sector. In this case, users can modify the page size and read the chip again using the data recovery tools.Procedure for modifying page size using flash data recovery tools:

Step 1. Input added bytes in the blank marked in red as above. Example, if users think that real page size should be 4288, you need to input 64.Step 2. Click the button of Chip Identification.Step 3. Read the data from chip once more.

2. Special Page Structure setting in data recovery toolsGenerally, data unit in FLASH device are composed of 512 bytes data plus some bytes of service word, i.e. 512+16. However, some FLASH devices have special page structure. The standard data unit is divided into several sections, namely sub data unit is less than 512 bytes. Another special structure is that several data unit will merge into bigger unit, namely the data unit is bigger than 512 bytes.

3. Data recovery tools against “Block is divided into sections”As in the above picture, the data unit has 528 bytes, which is divided into three sections: Data Unit Size=SectionSize1+SectionSize2+SectionSize3528=512+16=(176+4)+(168+4)+(168+8)

According to standard ATA protocol, BSY bit of status register will be set to "1" (active) to tell the host that HDD can't process any ATA command when HDD gets stuck. In such case, Data Compass can issue a soft reset, hard reset or power reset command to HDD and bring it to the status of DRD. During our data recovery job, we found that some portion of HDD especially some Barracuda 7200.11 and 7200.12 do not obey such ATA protocol most of the time: The BSY bit will not be set to be "1" even when HDD gets stuck; instead, the status register will still be ‘ready’. Thus, Data Compass can not monitor this and will continue to read but off course all the content will be "4040" as HDD gets stuck. In version 7.4, such kind of situation has been taken into consideration: Once you select the option of “Reset power when error occurs", the program will check the read content. If the content turns out to be all "4040", the program knows the HDD gets stuck (even though the status register reports ‘Ready’) and will reset the power to bring HDD to readiness, therefore the data in the rest of the sectors can be read properly.

Two Basic Concepts In Data Recovery Industry

Generally, data recovery engineers do recovery work using well-known software in this field but they don’t have a clear mind which software/toolkit is suitable for a particular problem. As there is no major of data recovery in this industry and most of the data recovery engineers only have the computer-related background, most of them mostly misunderstand some concepts and work flow of this field. Therefore, your ease of work will grow if you can make a clear difference of the physical data recovery and logical data recovery. One of data recovery process named 3+1 data recovery can help us to define these two different cases.

Data recovery process that leads to recovery or salvaging of data from physically crashed or damaged hard disk is known as Physical Data Recovery. When there is a physical damage with Hard Disk, need of Physical Data Recovery arises. Physical data recovery is the extraction of the raw data from a damaged disc. If a hard drive is not accessible by software such as the system BIOS, Windows' Disk Management, or other disk utilities it can be considered as truly dead and in need of physical data recovery.

In fact, physical data recovery is the most common problem that professional data recovery companies may face up to. Physical damage always causes at least some data loss, and in many cases the logical structures of the file system are damaged as well. A wide variety of failures can cause physical damage to storage media. CD-ROMs can have their metallic substrate or dye layer scratched off; hard disks can suffer any of several mechanical failures, such as head crashes and failed motors; and tapes can simply break.

Meanwhile, physical data recovery is essential when there is a physical problem with the media or plastics which prevents the data from being read normally. This type of recovery may include dealing with issues such as deteriorating magnetic coatings, cracked or broken reels/cartridge shells, creased tape edges, twisted or folded tape, stretched or broken tape, etc. This recovery type also includes capturing the data from media that has mistakenly subjected to adverse conditions such as water, mud, or other debris. While these physical issues are often difficult to handle, recovery of these types can usually be achieved in the high 98+ per cent range.

The chances of successful data recovery depend on the extent of the damage. Data recovery from a platter that has been heated up to Curie temperature (770 degrees Celsius for iron) is not even theoretically possible as this temperature completely demagnetizes the platters. Physical data recovery from a drive that has failed mechanically may not need any subsequent logical reconstruction if it can be successfully repaired, though in practice many physical repairs are followed by logical reconstruction if some data is permanently lost due to damaged disc surfaces.

Most physical damage cannot be repaired by end users. Some physical recoveries are very time consuming and can be expensive. In most cases, physical data recoveries offer excellent probabilities for a successful data recovery. Furthermore, end users generally do not have the hardware or technical expertise required to make these repairs; therefore, data recovery companies are consulted. These firms often use Class 100 clean room facilities to protect the media while repairs are being made. Different recovery experts offer different data recovery rates.

According to our investigation, in physical failures the average recovery time is anywhere from 5 to 10 business days. In rare circumstances it does take longer to recover the data, especially if there is extensive damage to the platters and/or we have to order hard to find components. The time of recovery usually depends on three variables:
1. What type of failure has occurred?
2. What's the extent of the damage?
3. Will it require the ordering of special components?
Now we can come to a conclusion that physical data recovery is a highly sophisticated, and often expensive service.

However, the more common damage type is logical damage to a file system. Logical damage can be caused by power outages, hardware problems (e.g. RAID controllers), driver problems, or system crashes. All of these events leave the file system in an inconsistent state causing such problems as drives reporting negative amounts of free space, system crashes, or physical loss of data.

There are hundreds of logical data recovery software in the market which can do this and some versions are free of charge too. A quite common symptom drives have is clicking, knocking or beeping sound. Clicking can be because of broken heads , firmware corruption or PCB problem, it is very important to perform accurate diagnostics what the particular problem is. Generally speaking, the drive spins up and the head starts clicking right from the beginning with a regular constant sound, most often this is a sign of bad heads.

2. Bad sectors problem
There is one more problem that is typical for all manufactured hard drives: bad sectors. Raid 5EE data recovery-Case Study

As we all know, in 1987, Patterson, Gibson and Katz at the University of California Berkeley, published a paper entitled “A Case for Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID)”. This paper described various types of disk arrays, referred to by the acronym RAID. The basic idea of RAID was to combine multiple small, inexpensive disk drives into an array of disk drives which yields performance exceeding that of a Single Large Expensive Drive (SLED). Additionally, this array of drives appears to the computer as a single logical storage unit or drive.

The Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of the array will be equal to the MTBF of an individual drive, divided by the number of drives in the array. Because of this, the MTBF of an array of drives would be too low for many application requirements. However, disk arrays can be made fault-tolerant by redundantly storing information in various ways.

Five types of array architectures, RAID-1 through RAID-5, were defined by the Berkeley paper, each providing disk fault-tolerance and each offering different trade-offs in features and performance. In addition to these five redundant array architectures, it has become popular to refer to a non-redundant array of disk drives as a RAID-0 array.

Data Striping

Fundamental to RAID is “striping”, a method of concatenating multiple drives into one logical storage unit. Striping involves partitioning each drive’s storage space into stripes which may be as small as one sector (512 bytes) or as large as several megabytes. These stripes are then interleaved round-robin, so that the combined space is composed alternately of stripes from each drive. In effect, the storage space of the drives is shuffled like a deck of cards. The type of application environment, I/O or data intensive, determines whether large or small stripes should be used.

Most multi-user operating systems today, like NT, Unix and Netware, support overlapped disk I/O operations across multiple drives. However, in order to maximize throughput for the disk subsystem, the I/O load must be balanced across all the drives so that each drive can be kept busy as much as possible. In a multiple drive system without striping, the disk I/O load is never perfectly balanced. Some drives will contain data files which are frequently accessed and some drives will only rarely be accessed. In I/O intensive environments, performance is optimized by striping the drives in the array with stripes large enough so that each record potentially falls entirely within one stripe. This ensures that the data and I/O will be evenly distributed across the array, allowing each drive to work on a different I/O operation, and thus maximize the number of simultaneous I/O operations which can be performed by the array.

In data intensive environments and single-user systems which access large records, small stripes (typically one 512-byte sector in length) can be used so that each record will span across all the drives in the array, each drive storing part of the data from the record. This causes long record accesses to be performed faster, since the data transfer occurs in parallel on multiple drives. Unfortunately, small stripes rule out multiple overlapped I/O operations, since each I/O will typically involve all drives. However, operating systems like DOS which do not allow overlapped disk I/O, will not be negatively impacted. Applications such as on-demand video/audio, medical imaging and data acquisition, which utilize long record accesses, will achieve optimum performance with small stripe arrays.

A potential drawback to using small stripes is that synchronized spindle drives are required in order to keep performance from being degraded when short records are accessed. Without synchronized spindles, each drive in the array will be at different random rotational positions. Since an I/O cannot be completed until every drive has accessed its part of the record, the drive which takes the longest will determine when the I/O completes. The more drives in the array, the more the average access time for the array approaches the worst case single-drive access time. Synchronized spindles assure that every drive in the array reaches its data at the same time. The access time of the array will thus be equal to the average access time of a single drive rather than approaching the worst case access time.

The different RAID levels

RAID-0
RAID Level 0 is not redundant, hence does not truly fit the “RAID” acronym. In level 0, data is split across drives, resulting in higher data throughput. Since no redundant information is stored, performance is very good, but the failure of any disk in the array results in data loss. This level is commonly referred to as striping.

RAID-1
RAID Level 1 provides redundancy by writing all data to two or more drives. The performance of a level 1 array tends to be faster on reads and slower on writes compared to a single drive, but if either drive fails, no data is lost. This is a good entry-level redundant system, since only two drives are required; however, since one drive is used to store a duplicate of the data, the cost per megabyte is high. This level is commonly referred to as mirroring.

RAID-2
RAID Level 2, which uses Hamming error correction codes, is intended for use with drives which do not have built-in error detection. All SCSI drives support built-in error detection, so this level is of little use when using SCSI drives.

RAID-3
RAID Level 3 stripes data at a byte level across several drives, with parity stored on one drive. It is otherwise similar to level 4. Byte-level striping requires hardware support for efficient use.

RAID-4
RAID Level 4 stripes data at a block level across several drives, with parity stored on one drive. The parity information allows recovery from the failure of any single drive. The performance of a level 4 array is very good for reads (the same as level 0). Writes, however, require that parity data be updated each time. This slows small random writes, in particular, though large writes or sequential writes are fairly fast. Because only one drive in the array stores redundant data, the cost per megabyte of a level 4 array can be fairly low.

RAID-5
RAID Level 5 is similar to level 4, but distributes parity among the drives. This can speed small writes in multiprocessing systems, since the parity disk does not become a bottleneck. Because parity data must be skipped on each drive during reads, however, the performance for reads tends to be considerably lower than a level 4 array. The cost per megabyte is the same as for level

Since our case study is for a RAID 5EE case, so we need to get to understand RAID level-5EE
(Note: This feature is not supported on all controllers.)

RAID level-5EE is similar to RAID level-5E but with a more efficient distributed spare and faster rebuild times. Like RAID level-5E, this RAID level stripes data and parity across all of the drives in the array.

RAID level-5EE offers both data protection and increased throughput. When an array is assigned RAID level-5EE, the capacity of the logical drive is reduced by the capacity of two physical drives in the array: one for parity and one for the spare.

The spare drive is part of the RAID level-5EE array. However, unlike RAID level-5E, which uses contiguous free space for the spare, a RAID level-5EE spare is interleaved with the parity blocks, as shown in the following example. This allows data to be reconstructed more quickly if a physical drive in the array fails. With such a configuration, you cannot share the spare drive with other arrays. If you want a spare drive for any other array, you must have another spare drive for those arrays.

RAID level-5EE requires a minimum of four drives and, depending upon the level of firmware and the stripe-unit size, supports a maximum of 8 or 16 drives. RAID level-5EE is also firmware-specific.

The following illustration is an example of a RAID level-5EE logical drive.

Start with four physical drives.

Create an array using all four physical drives.

Then create a logical drive within the array.

The data is striped across the drives, creating blocks in the logical drive. The storage of the data parity (denoted by *) is striped, and it shifts from drive to drive as it does in RAID level-5E. The spare drive (denoted by S) is interleaved with the parity blocks, and it also shifts from drive to drive.

If a physical drive fails in the array, the data from the failed drive is reconstructed. The array undergoes compaction, and the distributed spare drive becomes part of the array. The logical drive remains RAID level-5EE.

When you replace the failed drive, the data for the logical drive undergoes expansion and returns to the original striping scheme.

Advantages and disadvantages
RAID level-5EE offers the following advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
• 100% data protection
• Offers more physical drive storage capacity than RAID level-1 or level-1E
• Higher performance than RAID level-5
• Faster rebuild than RAID level-5E

Disadvantages
• Lower performance than RAID level-1 and level-1E
• Supports only one logical drive per array
• Cannot share a hot-spare drive with other arrays
• Not supported on all controllers

Recently, we successfully retrieved data from it by using Data Compass from SalvationDATA.
Firstly, you need image all the drives into files. Then run the Data Compass Controller and Program:

In Data Compass, RAID utility supports both “automatic mode” and “manual mode” of analysis. We will introduce how to analyze a RAID 5EE system in automatic mode first:

Select Analysis Mode
First select the analyzing mode; then we only need to define the Number of Segment Disks (the original number of disks in the RAID system), RAID Type and RAID Manufacturer. In this example, we have 4 segment disks, RAID type is RAID 5EE and from MANUFACTURER_Standard
Please Note: the IBM RAID controller is SNIA Compatible; all manufacturers belong to MANUFACTURER_Standard, aside from AMI, HP/COMPAQ and DYNAMIC Disk.

The next step is to import RAID segment disks, they can be disk image or physical disk; in automatic mode, users can import the segment disks by random sequence, the program will work out the actual order.

Click “Apply’’ after importing all the segment disks, then program will analyze segment disk sequence and the storage method according to these setting information, and return with all parameters.

Remark: How to understand the returned HDD sequence

HD0, HD1, HD2 and HD3 on the left side represents the importing sequence of the segment disks (this sequence means nothing indeed); 3.1.2.0 on the right side represents the native sequence of the segment disks. For example, the native segment sequence in this case study is 3.1.2.0, which means the segment you imported as HD3 is actually the first segment disk in the RAID system, HD1 is the 2rd, HD2 the 3rd and HD0 the 4th.

By clicking the OK button next to the “Apply” and “Stop” button, program will try to open the virtually created RAID system and display the partitions and files in the DCEXP interface.

Double click the needed partition, and double click ROOT to show folders and files.

Now users can recover the needed files just like recovering data from a normal HDD.

Second, we will introduce how to analyze a RAID 5EE system in manual mode:

When select Manual Setting, all the parameters should be set manually and you need to know the native sequence of the segment disks (in case you don’t know, work it out by trial and error) and other parameters marked in red frame. In this case, the Number of Segment Disks should be 4, with RAID Type 5EE. Manufacturer Standard, Block Order is RIGHT_ASYNCHRONOUS and Stripe Size is 8KB.

Attention:
1. The IBM RAID controller is SNIA Compatible; all manufacturers belong to MANUFACTURER_Standard, aside from AMI, HP/COMPAQ and DYNAMIC Disk.
2. Delay is only available in HP/COMPAQ RAID system; users don’t need to set this option for RAID system of other manufactures.
3. For all the RAID system of HP/COMPAQ and some of other manufactures, users need to set Header Size for analysis. The Header Size need to match different RAID system and users normally set it by trial and error according to experience. In this case we don’t need to set the header size, because there is no Header Size (offset) in this RAID system.

After that, import the segment disks exactly in the native sequence. In this case, the third segment drive was lost.

After setting, click “Apply” button and wait until you receive the below message:

By clicking the OK button next to the “Apply” and “Stop” button, program will try to open the virtually created RAID system and display the partitions and files in the DCEXP interface.

Attention: If the parameter set is incorrect and program can’t acquire the partition, users need to reset the parameter and try again *(Manual Mode is a process of trial and error).

Double click the needed partition, and double click ROOT to show folders and files.

Now users can recover the needed files just like recovering data from a normal HDD.

From the above case study, we know that the basic steps to recover a RAID case. Nowadays, the Raid is widely used by corporations, and large businesses, the storage efficiency is raised thank to this technology. But it doesn’t mean it is worry free for our crucial data. Data Recovery is remedial way and our last choice of no choice. The key of data security is BACKUP, no other shortcuts

How to Judge If the original and donor drives are Compatible?

Data Compass triumphs!
Today we received a Toshiba 40GB MK4021GAS hdd. It came from another company repair shop. We were disappointed because motor would not spin up fully. We could get NO response from PC3k. We cycled power on Data Compass v5.0 and increase power it recognized and spin up.

It made very loud noise (bearings). We suspect bad bearings, so we leave power ON.

Launched DC Explorer (new version).

Selected DC Console device and grab MY PICTURES (client/customer expressed ONLY picture VERY important!).

We succeeded 100% with My Pictures folder recovery using DC and DCexplorer.

Drive has been on for several hours and we have retrieve the most important files.

This drive is very very noisy and makes many sounds and will likely die at any moment. However, we consider it very much like DataExtractor in ability to retrieve data immediately when time is limited.

We are now imaging drive and will try for 100% data. Customer only want “MY PICTURES” folder, but of course we only wish to try to succeed even more.

Click of death is a term that became common in the late 1990s referring to the clicking sound in disk storage systems that signals the device has failed, often catastrophically. The term is also used specifically to refer to the failure of portable Iomega Zip drives or cartridges. The "click of death" can also be an informal warning system before the data on a data drive is lost.

On a hard disk system, the click of death refers to a similar phenomenon, generally a read/write error during a seek function. If the hard disk has a hard error (hardware failure that cannot be undone by rebooting) or servo mechanism failure, the head actuator will buzz and click as the drive tries to recalibrate. In most cases, the defect is due to physical abuse or a manufacturing error. The cause of the read/write errors is often due to the failure of the read/write heads' preamplifier, a small chip usually found soldered to the flexible cable on the actuator of modern hard drives. IBM's storage division had their own click of death problems in 2001 with the mass failure of their popular Deskstar, dubbed "Deathstar", 75GXP hard disks. Note that not all clicking sounds indicate a defective hard drive, but may be caused by a not fully inserted or damaged signal cable. Rarely, noise can be generated by power supply cables or other components close to the signal cable.

A head crash is a specific type of hard disk failure, and occurs when the read-write head of a hard disk drive touches its rotating platter resulting in catastrophic damage to the magnetic media on the platter surface (see Hard disk platter).

The head normally rides on a thin film of moving air entrapped at the surface of the platter (some drives of the mid-1990s used a thin liquid layer instead)[citation needed]. The topmost layer of the platter is made of a Teflon-like material that acts like a lubricant. Underneath is a layer of sputtered carbon. These two layers protect the magnetic layer (data storage area) from most accidental touches of the read-write head.

A head crash can be initiated by a tiny particle of dirt or other detritus which can cause
the head to bounce against the disk, destroying the thin magnetic coating on the disk. The disk read-and-write head is made using thin film techniques that include materials hard enough to scratch through the protective layers. A head crash may also occur when a hard disk equipped device is accidentally dropped. Modern hard disks incorporate free fall sensors to offer protection against this.

Since most modern drives spin at rates between 5,400 and 15,000 RPM, the damage caused to the magnetic coating can be extensive. At 7,200 RPM the edge of the platter is traveling at over 74 miles per hour (120 km/h), as the crashed head drags over the platter surface the read-write head generally overheats, making the drive or at least parts of it unusable until the heads cool. Following a head crash, particles of material scraped free of the drive surface greatly increase the chances of further head crashes or damage to the platters.

Older drives typically rotated far more slowly and had larger heads flying higher above the surface of the medium. However since in many cases the medium was housed in a removable cartridge or pack and since air filtration was comparatively crude crashes were fairly frequent and invariably expensive.

DOCUMENTATION VIEWING THE RESULTS OF A HEAD CRASH

Last week we had a hard drive crash on an IBM Death Star which was in one of the Virgo servers. I had not had a chance to migrate that machine yet to TSM at the time of the crash, and was asked to see if we could determine the cause of the crash, as well as to determine if it would be possible to recover any of the data on the drive.

Yesterday, on April 21st 2003, we finally had the opportunity to open up the drive and
determine the extent of the failure. This is a documentary of what we found.

The first thing I noticed was that a blue ooze had seeped out of the bottom of the drive. At this point I was concerned that some of the goo had possibly oozed into the drive housing and onto the platters.

The first step was to remove the screws on the drive lid. I suspect this voided the warranty, but we were on a mission. I had to visit a few different people before I finally found a set of torx
screwdrivers in size 8. (note to self: purchase a torx 8 screwdriver from sears).

The lid came right off. The first thing we noticed was that there was a large amount of magnetic dust stuck on the lid of the drive. I wiped my finger in one place just to verify that this was not a part of the original manufacture process.

I wondered where all of that dust came from, and then I saw the platters. That's odd, I've never seen see through platters before.

After popping out the first platter I realized that I was correct. The drive platter was now see through. It appears that the head crash scrubbed the drive so clean that the magnetic substrate has been wiped clean off the platters.

After removing all of the platters from the unit, I noticed that there sure was a large amount of dust inside of the drive housing.

Here's another close-up of the inside of the drive housing. I had wiped my finger on the inside of the housing before shooting this picture.

The damage wasn't limited to just one or two platters. All five of the platters received some level of surface wiping.

Well, that's it for the report. I've never seen a drive fail in this way, and every person I've showed the platters to have been equally perplexed.
